Luxembourg explored

Todays agenda was to explore the city of Luxembourg.  But first a little breakfast Fischer style…literally!

Then our hosts took us on to the free tram to get a view of many of the sites and important buildings of the expanding city.  (All public transportation is free in Luxembourg).  And it is the most spotlessly clean public transportation you will ever see.

After that tram overview to orient ourselves we set off on foot for a walking tour with our guide Janka sharing the facts and secrets, and Rich demonstrated his wingspan

From an overlook we got the our first glimpse of the Golden Lady, who resides at the Memorial of Remembrance for Luxembourgish soldiers. The Nazis tore her down - but you can’t keep a golden lady down. But I like to think she is there for the KKK&J Wordle Club ready to crown the daily Wordle Queen.  Which was sadly not me today.  I blame the jet lag.

Then it was off to the Adolph Bridge which has a nice walking and biking path enclosed in the arch.

The path continues through parkland with lots of interesting rock formations.

We also found European wild poppies (and some delicious truffle cheese which Rich was keeping close track of

Then back to town, where Katja pointed out some interesting rock carvings on one of the buildings.  We have many theories about what it is depicting…but whatever it might mean, we hope that the animal is enjoying it.

Town came with lunch - preparations of local white asparagus for all - and some shopping. Which is always more attractive in Europe than at home.

Took a look at the official palace of Luxembourg’s Grand Duke.  Europe has ten remaining hereditary  monarchies, but of those,  Luxembourg is the only  “ Grand Duchy” created after the defeat of Napoleon. It had a few guards doing some fancy marching.  We also saw it late in the evening lit with Ukrainian colors.

And a glimpse of the famous red bridge (no not the one in San Francisco) as sunset approached.

We enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the cranes of this expanding city.  I guess the world can always use more banks?  There are cranes everywhere.  Hard to take a picture of scenery here without one.  I’m guessing if any of you come to visit the skyline will be much larger.

It was so enjoyable to have someone else navigating and sharing her personnel experience of a city that is new to us.  So relaxing to not be constantly looking at Google maps to figure out where to go.  A great first day.  (Now with luggage as of 10 pm!). So as the sun sets n our first true day of vacation, I’ll share two signs we saw today.  One sums up our life mantra:

And the other reminds us there is no place like home.
